Further to my message on 18 March announcing new measures the University of York is taking to support our international applicants, I wanted to set out some additional detail and further changes we are making:
Pre-sessional English language courses
• All of our pre-sessional English language courses will move online
• Tuition fees have been reduced by 25% for all pre-sessional courses
• Students progressing from the 20-week, 15-week or 10-week to their main programme of study will receive a 10% discount on their main programme tuition fee for each year of study and for all levels (undergraduate/masters/PhD)
• No CAS will be issued for the online pre-sessionals as students will not need a Tier 4 visa to study them. For the same reason, a wider range of English language qualifications will be accepted for entry on to the pre-sessionals
• Non-York applicants will also be able to study the online pre-sessional courses
Removal of the reference requirement for masters applications
• The requirement for PGT (masters) applicants to provide a letter of reference will be removed for all programmes
• The aim of this change is to speed up admissions processing time and maximise the number of applicants moving to unconditional status
• The only exceptions would be in cases where the reference is required to meet external regulatory requirements
• The reference requirement remains in place for all PGR (PhD) applicants
PhD start dates
• All PhD applicants and offer holders who were due to enrol from April to July 2020 have been given a new proposed start date of 1 October 2020
• Any future applicants who apply for a PhD start date from April to July 2020 will also be given a new proposed start date of 1 October 2020
Next steps
• Admissions will contact all existing pre-sessional English language applicants and offer-holders and will offer the online alternative programme.
• If students have already paid fees for their pre-sessional, these will be credited to their new online course. Any difference between the fees can be used towards their main degree programme tuition fee
• Admissions will remove outstanding reference conditions from existing offer-holders and all new applicants will be processed without a reference condition
• Admissions will contact all offer-holders to advise them of our course of action and we are in the process of updating our web pages to reflect this position
