Greetings from the International Office at DCU. We hope this message finds you all well and healthy. Given the current global situation regarding COVID 19 (coronavirus), we wanted to contact you regarding the precautions and actions being taken by the University to ensure everyone's health and safety.
DCU is updating students and staff via this website - https://www.dcu.ie/coronavirus/index.shtml - so keep checking this website for any updates or new information. Today the decision was made to switch to online delivery of all courses from Monday, 16th March. Therefore, students will not be required to be present on campus, and have been advised that it may be in their best interest to return to their home countries. Please see the email that was sent to all currently registered students by the University's Chief Operating Officer this afternoon below.
We are working through a very uncertain period and, while DCU is working hard to ensure that all students are adequately supported. We understand that you may receive queries from any of your currently enrolled students, so I wanted to make sure you had the most up to date information. As always, thanks for your help, understanding and flexibility during this challenging time.
DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY
DCU Campus Closure - All Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is moving on-line from 9 am on Monday, March 16th.
In agreement with today’s announcement by An Taoiseach regarding the on-going coronavirus outbreak, Dublin City University will suspend all on-campus lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes effective from 6 pm today March 12th in the first instance until March 29th.
The on-line delivery of academic programs for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students will commence from 9 am on Monday, March 16th.
This means:
• All on-campus teaching and related activities (e.g. laboratory classes and tutorials) at undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education levels will be suspended from 6 pm this evening March 12th.
• The University libraries (O’Reilly and Cregan) will close at 5 pm tomorrow, Friday March 13th. This is to provide students with an opportunity to access materials and take books out on loan etc. Extended loan periods will be provided by DCU Library Services – further details are available on the DCU Libraries webpage.
• Both the U Building (Student Centre) on the Glasnevin Campus and the Java Café on the St. Patrick’s campus will close at 6pm this evening March 12th
• The DCU Sports Complex and Soccer Centre will close from 6pm this evening. For sporting events that are scheduled to take place on the DCU Sports Campus (St. Claire’s), organisers should liaise directly with DCU Sport to re-confirm events.
• The Londis shops on both the Glasnevin and St. Patrick’s campuses will remain open for the period.
• The Student Health Centres on both the Glasnevin and St. Patrick’s campuses will remain open, by appointment only, as will the Pharmacy on the Glasnevin campus.
• All CTYI and DCU Language Services classes are suspended from 6pm this evening March 12th
International Students
DCU Students who are studying or on work placement overseas, are being advised, due to the unprecedented nature of the current situation, to return to Ireland, if feasible.
International students currently studying on campus at DCU are also advised, if feasible, to return to their home country.
DCU would like to reassure the students referred to above, that if they do return home, appropriate academic arrangements will be put in place so that they can complete their year of study.
On-Campus Residences
Students living in on-campus residences will have full access to their accommodation. In line with the latest HSE advice, we are asking all on-campus residents to take all practical steps to socially distance themselves and practise good personal hygiene to minimize the risk of contracting COVID-19.
Commercial companies based on University campuses
Commercial companies based in DCU Invent, DCU Alpha Innovation Campus or in the Hamilton building will have full access to their facilities as normal during the period. The Osmosis Café and Talent Garden Cafe on DCU Alpha will also remain open as normal. It is a matter for each company to determine its approach for their employees under the circumstances.
Creche
We have been informed by the Creche on the Glasnevin campus that it will be closing from 6.15pm this evening.
